Petit ELJ Burdell consists of two amazing Centres located right next to each other, creating one big family.
Our mission at Burdell is to provide children with an environment where they can build lifelong friendships and a love of learning. Our Centres take pride in being able to offer a culturally inclusive environment which strengthens our connectedness to our families and the wider community.
Our team of educators welcome all families into our centres and build a collaborative relationship that enhances each child’s learning journey.
At Petit ELJ Burdell, we provide a well-resourced environment for our educators to be able to facilitate and extend each child’s interests prompting their exploration of life.
We believe in letting children take the lead in their learning and live by the motto of “if a child can’t learn the way we teach, then maybe we should teach the way they learn”.
Katie GudgeCentre Director
Hi, I’m Katie, and I am the Centre Director at our Petit ELJ Centres in Burdell 1 & 2. I have been working in the Childcare industry since 1991. I have now been with Petit ELJ since 2014 when we opened our first centre in Townsville.
I have an Advanced Diploma of Children’s services, and I am also a Qualified Justice of the Peace. My mother owned and operated a childcare centre from when I was very young. I have had the pleasure to work with families from all walks of life, and that has made me love working in childcare even more.
The most rewarding aspect of my role is seeing each child learn new things, smile, and be happy to see me — knowing that I am doing a job I love and that parents have so much trust to leave the most important thing in their lives in my care.
I am fortunate to be able to work with a team of highly skilled educators, that are warm, friendly and most importantly share the same beliefs that I do. Children come first at Petit ELJ. Both in everyday activities and decisions made around the centre.

There is a strong focus on children’s social and emotional development to ensure that each child has the skills to become active and confident learners as they move onto school.
Here at Petit ELJ Burdell, we run a play-based program that stems from the children’s interests, strengths and needs.
We have a keen interest in the importance of families in the children’s kindergarten experience, and we work to nurture the link between home and kindergarten with all the families we meet. We are excited to share with you the learning of your child, and we look forward to the shared experiences of play and fun that we have in each session.
Petit ELJ Burdell Kindergarten Teacher Profiles
Kayly WhelanEarly Childhood Teacher Burdell 1
I have been in Kindergarten for over 4 years, and there is no other job that I would love as much as this one. I cherish building relationships with the children and find their smiles, hugs and stories are the best parts of my day.
I believe that the early years of learning are one the biggest and most important years of a children’s learning. I want to make sure that your children’s year in the Treasure Cove classroom is one of the best years of their schooling through learning, enjoyment and happiness.
I believe that all children are unique and that they all learn in different styles, and it is essential that as a teacher, you cater your teaching to all the children’s personal styles. I want my children to feel as though they are in a safe and supportive environment and that the children to educator relationship are one of positivity and security.
As this is their last year before prep, our kindergarten program focuses on school readiness. This includes helping prepare them socially and emotionally for their next journey and helping them have a confident self-identity and that they can self-regulate their emotions. We encourage this through a range of activities that include music and movement and children-based ideas. We also start to learn the basic literacy and numeracy skills to help them for prep, but this is all done at the children’s own pace.
Our room is one of Children’s interest, flexible routine as well as lots of laughter and smiles. My main goal every day is that the children are enjoying coming and spending their time in Treasure Cove.
Ashley MitchellEarly Childhood Teacher Burdell 2
I am very proud to be the Early Childhood Teacher of Treasure Cove Burdell 2. I have two children of my own Logan 7 and Hunter 11.
I grew up in the Hawkesbury, Western Sydney. As my husband is in the Australian Army, my experience has been able to expand across three States, continuing now in North Queensland.
My career and love for growing young minds begun 14 years ago as a trainee, studying my Certificate in Childcare. This then led into a Diploma qualification, where I gained 5 years of experience as a Group Leader with the 2-year-old age group.
My passion for early years education led me into my Bachelor of Education with Charles Sturt University. I have spent the past few years loving my time working at
Petit ELJ Burdell 2.

We’ve absolutely loved Petit. Everyone is so nice and welcoming. Hudson loved his teachers and interacting with the other kids and he’s learnt so much while attending. We’re very sad to be leaving.
